BREAKING: McCarthy passes the gavel

Boehner defeated his protege and defeated McCarthy to become House speaker, clearing the way for a new leadership slate, per reports.

McCarthy, who delivered the most vitriolic remarks during the historic speech against the Russia investigations, said:

“I honestly don’t think you will see me again in elected office, I just don’t. I love the institution, I love the service of this institution and I love the country and I know that you will make the right choice and so I hope that you will make the right choice.”

— on whether he will run again in 2022

“I feel like I’ve been tossed out, just because my children are not here anymore. They are left all alone and we are caught up in this thing and I just feel like I don’t understand the system.”

— on whether he has any personal relationship with President Trump

“Some things they (the #RESIST members) want do is vote against everything, and frankly, that’s not leadership. I will not do that and you should not expect me to do that. So it’s a big part of the frustration is doing that, I don’t want to vote that way.”

“You have to embrace the president. A lot of times when we’re on the same side of the aisle and the White House, we don’t have the same relationships. And it would be nice to have that more often than it is happening. I understand the frustration with that, but I want to be a team player.”

— on why he wants to serve as the House speaker

Editor’s note: CNN’s Andrew Kaczynski contacted McCarthy’s office later in the afternoon to clarify that McCarthy has “made no such decision.”
