Fire breaks out at the Place de l’Opera in central Paris

A fire broke out Wednesday night at Place de l’Opera in central Paris, forcing many to evacuate the area, according to multiple media reports.

Heavy black smoke was seen rising from the area after the fire broke out just before 9 p.m. and smoke could be seen billowing across the city. Some streets were closed, and traffic was diverted as firefighters worked to put out the blaze.

Five fire trucks responded to the blaze and several people were taken to the hospital for treatment, according to the Associated Press.

Pierre-André Pruzot, a spokesman for Paris Fire Brigade, told AFP that police had warned that there could be explosive devices in the building, which was being renovated, and investigators have found several detonators as well as books and other materials that could be used in an attack.

There were no reports of deaths or injuries as a result of the fire.

The theater is a popular place for weddings and parties, and was recently held in the center of an October storm.
