Richie Garcia (13-1) won his first pro fight in over four years, stopping Daniel Powell (10-12) in the second round of a heavyweight matchup at the Hotel Washington in downtown DC. The bout took place under the banner of Team Hennessy at an event that was headlined by a cruiserweight matchup between Chris Arreola and Denis Grachev.
It took Garcia a little while to get the first knockdown against the cautious Powell, who rose to his feet despite being caught with a right jab. From there, it was all Garcia as he pummeled Powell with punches until he went down to one knee and finally to one knee and a stretcher was called in. Garcia finished with two knockdowns and finished the fight with a barrage of punches that resulted in Powell dropping to the ground.
Powell was credited with two knockdowns, with the first one coming on Powell’s final knockdown and the second one coming from a flurry of punches with 7 seconds remaining in the round.
